Apolinaria Mararagan Amparo

Apolinaria “Poleng” Mararagan Amparo was born on July 23, 1928 in Mendez, Cavite, Philippines. The third child of Candido Mararagan and Maria Peñalba, Poleng grew up in the small town of Panungyan with her siblings Gavino, Vicenta, and Gerardo. Poleng learned to farm at a young age, helping her parents grow and sell coconuts, mangos, bananas, and coffee beans, a regional specialty. As a teenager, her schooling was cut short by the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II. After the war, Poleng married Aurelio Amparo and settled in Panungyan with her family. Together they had 11 children, Francisco, Cornelio, Nenita, Lena, Felizardo, Roger, Victoriano, Irene, Crispin, Elizabeth, and Aurelio Jr.

In 1978, Poleng immigrated to California to care for her grandchildren in the US while Aurelio and their children waited for their petitions to be approved. After 13 years, the Amparo family was finally reunited, eventually planting new roots in Oxnard, California. There the Amparo family flourished under Poleng’s nurturing care. As her children started their own families, Poleng lovingly raised her grandchildren and great-grandchildren into her golden years.

Poleng and Aurelio were married for 64 years before he passed away at age 91 in 2008. As the last surviving branch of her generation, Poleng bridged the traditions of the past with each new generation, blending her family's heritage with the culture of her new home. Our family is here today thanks to Poleng's resilience and determination to build a better future. We will honor her memory forever and always.
