Barbara Joan Powell, age 84, died on Thursday September 20, 2018 at St. John's Hospital surrounded by her loved ones. Barbara was born in Brooklyn New York on 23 September 1933. Her parents were James and Veronica Briggs. She was the oldest of four children.
She grew up in New York City and spent her summers down at Rockaway beach. She moved to Ventura County in 1971. There she raised her two boys, Michael and Chris. Barbara was preceded in death, by two husbands, Dale Payton and Maurice Powell. She leaves behind her brothers, Jim and Edward, a sister Veronica, a son Chris and grand daughter Whitney.
Barbara will always be remembered for her drive to live, sense of humor, and sharp wit. She was a member of the "Red Hats" organization. She also was active in the community as a member of "Friends of the Library." Barbara enjoyed traveling and going on cruises with her friends.
A last request: "Please don't say that I gave up, just say that I gave in, don't say I lost the battle, for it was God's war to win or lose; Please don't say how good I was, but that I did my best; just say I tried to do what's right, to give the most I could, not less. Don't be concerned about me now, I am well with God and I've finally made it home."
The Family would like to give thanks and gratitude to the Medical Staff at St. John's Hospital. The final three days of Barbara's life were spent in hospital, where the compassion and level of effort expanded in trying to save her were remarkable. We also would be remiss if we did not call attention to her friends in the Red Hats. They gave her many years of happiness and a view to pursue life regardless of the hardships. We thank all the loving, caring people that touched Barbara's life.
Arrangements under the direction of Funeraria Del Angel Oxnard.
