

Armand was born in Oxnard on August 14, 1928. He was the youngest in a family of ten children. All of his five sisters and four brothers predeceased him. Armand attended Santa Clara Elementary school was will as public school, having graduated from Oxnard High School in 1946. Subsequently he attended Ventura Junior College, (A.A. degree), U.C.S.B. (B.A. degree), and U.C.L.A. where he earned his Masters degree and was also a teaching assistant. In the following years he taught Spanish and English at Baldwin Park High School for four years and then obtained a teaching position at Mount San Antonio College where he taught for thirty-one years. During his teaching career he continued further his education by taking post-graduate courses at several universities. One of his proudest academic moments came when he received a Fulbright scholarship to attend summer courses in Colombia, South America where he studied language, culture and literature. Armand was a life-long participant in various sports and most recently was an active member of the Oxnard Lawn Bowling Club. After his retirement in 1989 Armand and his wife, Pauline, returned to live in his hometown of Oxnard.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Santa Clara Chapel on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 10:00 am to be followed by burial at Santa Clara Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, mourners are requested to make a donation to Livingston Memorial Hospice.
Armand is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Pauline. Children Teresa Mercer, David Escalante (Fama Finley-Lara), Daniel Escalante (Lupe), 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Siblings preceeding him in death Wene, Chonita, Eva, Lawrence, Manuel, Humbert, Trinidad, Lucina and 1 surviving sister, Zoila Alvarez and many loved nieces and nephews.
