

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Ozark Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Steve King and Rev. Bill Hix officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, February 11, 2013.
Mr. Cockrell was born June 24, 1924 in Dorsey, Mississippi to Dillard and Offie Cockrell. He was a veteran of WWII, drafted into the Navy in 1943, and served in California for 18 months and then aboard the U.S.S. Montpelier “The Mighty Monty” as crew chief. He was honorably discharged in March 1946. He married Virginia Marcelle Loden December 21, 1946. He worked three years at Columbus Air Force Base in Columbus, Mississippi and moved to Ozark in 1954 and worked at Ft. Rucker for 20 years. He worked for Sony Corporation for 11-1/2 years, until he retired in December 1989. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an active member of Ozark Baptist Church, a deacon emeritus and a faithful member of the Prime of Life Sunday School class.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dillard and Offie Cockrell; and his only brother, Coy Cockrell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Virginia Loden Cockrell; his daughters: Mary (Jim) Royal of Eufaula, Marti (Wayne) Massey of Wicksburg, and Laura (John) Thornton of Ozark; grandchildren: Kevin (Ellen) Royal of Opelika, Miranda Cantor and fiance, Neal Ball, of Wicksburg, Katy, Sarah and Josh Moore of Ozark; great-grandchildren: Emma, Patrick and Benjamin Weaver Royal of Opelika and Levi Cantor of Wicksburg; a sister-in-law Pat Cockrell; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Bob Elia, Ott Cullifer, Johnny Young, George Williams, Ken Burnette and Bruce Robinson.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Ozark Baptist Church, 282 South Union Ave., Ozark, AL 36360.
