Delford Errington Burgess, fondly known as “Dell” by his loved ones and close friends,
was born to Aubrey and Ethel (Hause) Burgess in the beautiful parish of Portland,
Jamaica, W.I. He was the last son of seven children. His older brother, Roland and
younger sister, Cynthia, survive him. His other brothers, Lloyd, Kenneth and sisters,
Lilith, Gloria and half-brothers Seymour and Leslie passed on before him.
Delford had seven children: Junior preceded him in death, June, Derrick, Sandra, Jackie,
Shawn and Kellee and eight grandchildren, Pierce, Bryce, Nicholas, Jonathan, Tremaine,
Tishanna, Jahsenna and Jahvar and one great-grand child, Ilyana. Additionally, he left
behind nieces, nephews, countless other family members, and friends.
Delford left school at an early age to start working. In those early years, he worked for
the Publics Works department in Portland and Clarendon. As supervisor in the field, he
oversaw the workers in the various parish projects. He loved people and spent his offhours
socializing with the men with whom he worked. In his later years, he migrated to
the USA and worked for the New Jersey Transit Authority from 1983 to 2001.
Upon retirement, he relocated to Palm Bay, Florida, where he spent the rest of his days.
While living in Palm Bay, he accumulated a community of friends and maintained his
relationship with his daughter, ex-wife, and surviving brother and his wife. The
characteristics that best describe Dell are a sharp wit, comical humor, and a no-nonsense
attitude. He was never ashamed to express his opinion or speak his mind. His family and
friends appreciated his honesty, even when they disagreed with him. All will sorely miss
him.
Delford never missed an opportunity to fervently engage his friends and family in a
vibrant discussion on politics and religion. He was confident in his understanding of
these topics, and presented a challenge to anyone who would attempt to change his
mind. When not watching MSNBC, and catching up on the current news, he could be
found laughing at the antics of Sanford and Son. While on his sick bed, he was making
jokes with his visitors or nurses. His sense of humor included creating nicknames for
loved ones.
Those familiar with Delford can attest to his love for the outdoors. His best days were
spent in his yard planting, trimming, pruning, grafting, mowing, and fixing anything with
his house. His topiary designs in his front lawn testified of his adoration of nature. Well,
we will cherish the memory of him forever. Let’s hold on to the memory of the jokes,
comments, and positive motivation that Delford E. Burgess left with us.
We all await the coming of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, when we will rejoice to see
Him and our loved ones who rest in peace.
There will be a visitation held from 10 am - 12 pm on Friday, May 29, 2020 at Fountainhead Funeral Home.
