James Joseph Gobert passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025. Jim was born on New Year’s Eve, 1945, to Solomon and Frieda Gobert. Growing up in the Boston area, Jim developed a lifelong passion for the Red Sox. One of his most cherished memories was attending a baseball game at Fenway Park with his daughter Rachel, where the Sox beat the Yankees 3–0.
Jim earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, where he first met Cindy, who would later become his wife—48 years after they first crossed paths. He received his law degree from Duke University and taught law at the University of Tennessee and the University of Essex in England. His scholarly work focused on jury selection, a field to which he made significant contributions.
An accomplished tournament bridge player, Jim competed in both the United States and England. In his later years, he and Cindy taught bridge on cruise ships all over the world. Jim will be remembered for his intellect, warmth, and quick wit.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Bernstein; his devoted daughter Rachel DeLauder (Nathan); his cherished grandchildren Carlissa Weeks (Trey), Zeke DeLauder, and Cristian DeLauder; his dear sister, Deborah Gobert; his nephew Sam Kendig (Heidi); and Cynthia’s family Robin Bernstein (Pamela), Briana Bernstein (Joseph Richards), and Alyssa Bernstein.
The family is deeply grateful for the love and support he received at Zon Beachside Assisted Living and for the caring assistance offered by Vitas Hospice of Brevard County.
