Dearest Ray and family,

I am the daughter of Honnie Joseph, Laura’s aunt. Moma lives with me in Washington state and is 95 years old.  She has been asking about Laura as there was a letter that she received from her and never heard back from her. Moma talks about her all of the time and how Laura was always her favorite♥️  Moma couldn’t remember her last name and all of sudden she said to me today, it’s Derringer so I went online to see what I could find. I’m just so saddened we are too late to reconnect. My memories of Laura were the cousin that was always the kindest to me and she was more like a sister than my own sister, who has also passed.  Moma has a few photos and your wedding picture was always a cherished memory that moma loves so much. With that said, May God give you comfort and peace.

I remember through the years as we were growing up when Joan and Stanley would bring the kids and come to Kentucky. She was our first cousin but her and Jay were like brother and sister. It broke her heart when he was murdered and just like us she never got over it. I always thought she was so beautiful inside and out. We love you Laura. May you rest in peace our beautiful angel

I have so many fond memories of Laura (aka moo maw aka mah-shmee). She was always so welcoming of us when we were kids. She created a safe space for us to be crazy kids. She was so loving and caring to all of us. I specifically remember her making us pizza and cookies (at the time they were like the best thing I’d ever eaten... you had to be there). She was a mom to all of us. I will carry these memories with me forever.

I want to thank "Moomaw"(Shanna's petname for her amazing momma) for bringing 2 beautiful women in to this world. I had the pleasure to meet only one of them at the tender age of 13. I knew the sage soul I encountered was different from the rest. Extremely intouch with the human heart, everyone's funny bone, and could rise up to protect her loved ones at a moment's notice. 

This, I know, was a snapshot of the woman who raised her. This amazing Phoenix born from a mama dragon, with the same beautiful heart, an artist through and through, and clearly smart as a whip.

 I never met Laura in person, sadly, but in the 20+ years knowing and loving her daughter Shanna, I knew she was incredible. She would ask how I was, this girl across the country that she's never spoken to, and she would mean it. 

 Laura, I do pray the peace and calm you've found finds its way to Shanna and "Doodad" Ray's hearts as they wait for the beautiful day their family is reunited. 

You've made a forever lasting impression in my heart, may you rest in everlasting peace with your first born Myla. 

Laura must've been such a wonderful, thoughtful, smart, strong woman to raise the same qualities in her daughter Shanna. My heart is broken for the family, losing a Mom is unreal in heartache. I love you Shanna, know I've been thinking of you every day since i found out about your Moomaw. You are loved!

Shanna Rae, my thoughts are with you and your dad today. Your mom will be with you always and is undoubtedly proud of you. I love you! 

Shanna, my thoughts and prayers are with your family. I never heard you say anything but positive words about your mother and always spoke of her with great affection. The woman you are is proof of how amazing a woman she was. May her memory continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched and in the way you live your life. Much love from Ohio, we all wish we could be there to support you. 

I never Mrs. Derringer, because believe it or not in 20 years of long-distance friendship I’ve never met Shanna! But despite the distance, I feel like I’ve gotten to know Mrs. Derringer through the anecdotes Shanna shared over the years. Shanna’s devoted love of her parents shines through in every story she’s ever shared about them. Over time I learned bit by bit that Mrs. Derringer was amazingly talented, intelligent, funny, and kind. One time I shared on Facebook that I had only lined one of my eyebrows, forgetting the other, so I went around all day looking like o.O and Shanna said she and “moomaw” had laughed all day about my predicament. I was so pleased I could make two such sparkling women laugh that I still think about it sometimes, years later, and smile. 

I wish I could have met Mrs. Derringer, and thanked her, because the world is better when there are mothers like her in it. She has left her mark and I am certain she will be remembered fondly by everyone who has met her, or even just heard stories about her. All of my love to Shanna and her father in this time.

I loveeeeee you so much, I am glad your suffering is over! You were my second Mom and always will be!!!! I wish I could be there today!!!!! I will think of you often until we meet again!!!!

Shanna and Family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Shanna, although I didn’t know your mom, she was obviously an amazing person! I hope your memories of her bring some comfort. 

I may have never met your mother, but if she’s anything like you I know she was an amazing woman. She raised a wonderfully smart, funny, sarcastic, beautiful daughter (2, actually) and I know she was incredibly proud of you. I hope you can feel my love and support…may her love and memory live on for years to come. Love you!

Ms. Laura raised an amazing daughter. I’m so proud to call Shanna a friend and so grateful she is in my life. I’m so sorry for your loss she was a wonderful woman.
