Lavern Edward Wiebe, of Leesburg, Florida, passed away in Melbourne, Florida, July 14, 2025, at the age of 64. He was born on November 19, 1960, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Ellen. He grew up in Burnaby, British Columbia, with his late parents, George and Ruby (Derksen) Wiebe, and his brother, Roger Wiebe (Adam Dubroy). He is also preceded in death by his birth mother, Edna McLeod (Schimpky). Lavern is survived by his half-sisters, April Yamasaki (Robert) and Dawn McLeod; his half-brother, John McLeod, all of Canada; as well as his sister-in-law, Sharon Behr (Dennis); a brother-in-law, Michael Slutzky (Shari Snow); and stepdaughter, Tara Wofford (Matthew).
Known lovingly as “Papa,” Lavern will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Vanessa Kent (Jason), Matthew Jr., and Mackenzie Wofford—and his great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Maddox Kent. He is also fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends.
As a teenager, Lavern cultivated a passion for music, collecting an enormous number of records from many genres, especially rock. He also preferred biking to driving and often rode his 10-speed bike to school. He took long-distance cycling trips across provincial borders, embracing the open road with the same curiosity he brought to all things. A dedicated lifelong learner, Lavern earned his undergraduate degree from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, and a Master’s degree from Western University in London, Ontario. He later pursued doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin, where his deep curiosity and passion for knowledge continued to thrive. Lavern had an incredible memory and quick wit—he always knew the answers on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and it was nearly impossible to beat him at trivia nights, just ask his son-in-law and grandson-in-law. He had a mind for strategy and an unshakable calm under pressure—traits that made him not only brilliant but also deeply admired by all who knew him. He was an open-minded person who supported all people, no matter their race, creed, or identity.
Professionally, Lavern was passionate about teaching and had a deep respect for critical inquiry. Since 2008, he taught Philosophy, Ethics, and Critical Thinking at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Illinois, where he was known for his thoughtfulness, wit, and ability to challenge students to think deeply and compassionately about the world around them.
Lavern and Ellen met in 1990 playing bridge at the Madison (WI) Bridge Club, where they shared a love for the game that became a foundation of their relationship. A Life Master in bridge, Lavern also enjoyed chess and spent many joyful years competing and socializing through games of intellect and strategy. He and Ellen built a life together rooted in laughter, loyalty, and learning— first in Madison, Wisconsin, where they lived until 1994, when they moved to Aurora, Illinois, and later relocated to Leesburg, Florida, in 2016. Lavern joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles in 2017 and was an active and cherished member of Aerie 4273. His contributions there reflected the same generosity and kindness he brought to
every aspect of life. He was especially known for his love of animals—both pets and strays alike. Whether it was taking in cats in need of loving homes, or helping a turtle cross the road, Lavern had a soft heart for creatures great and small. His quiet compassion, intelligence, and humor made him a steadfast friend, devoted family member, and a true original who will be deeply missed.
Celebrations of Life will be held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, on September 21, 2025, and at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4273 in Okahumpka, Florida, on October 26, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lavern’s memory may be made to an animal no-kill shelter of your choice.
