Mercedes’ sunrise began November 17, 1927 in Haipe, Colombia. The oldest of 9 children born to Flora and Vicente Perdomo, she grew up in the family home with her eight brothers and sisters, Aguedita, Ernesto, Marco, Abel, Clementina, Omar, Ernan and Ofelia. She left school early and worked to help her mom with the younger siblings when her father passed away at an early age.
She and her two sisters worked at Britilana knitting mill in Cali, Colombia, where she learned the art of dress and pattern making. It was during this time that Mercedes met Marco Figueredo, the love of her life, and on May 7, 1958 they married after a long courtship. The family grew and Martha, the eldest daughter, Melba, Orlando and Liliana, were born in Colombia. It was then that they decided to emigrate to Brooklyn New York where their youngest son, John Jairo, was born. After five years the family moved to Mt. Holly, New Jersey. She enjoyed making beautiful dresses for her daughters and sewed for people in the community. One Sunday in 1973, Mercedes visited Lirio de los Valles Pentecostal Church, and on that day she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and began a life of service. Mercedes was a member of Lirio de los Valles for 29 years.
After her husband Marco’s death in 2004, Mercedes sold her home and moved to Florida to live with Liliana, her youngest daughter. She gathered her strength, as she always did, and continued pressing toward the mark of the high calling in Christ Jesus. She said the Lord led her to Iglesia Elohim where their love and compassion nourished her spirit and she proudly carried the name ‘mother of the church’. Many family members and friends have come to know the Lord because of the way she lived her life.
Sister Figueredo never lost her enthusiasm in praising and serving God and found her purpose helping others find theirs. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love for the things of God and is survived by her children; Martha, Melba, Orlando (Nydia), Liliana and John (Mika), her grandchildren Adriana, Alex, Armani, Daniel (Dana), Christopher and Christian (Keila), her great-grand children, Cameron and Elija, her sister Aguedita, brothers, Ernesto and Omar, her nieces and nephews Martha Elsy (Mario), Alexandra, Julian and Nicholas, and many more nieces and nephews in Colombia. Even after 94 years, her sunset on March 31, 2022 has come too soon for us. We miss you dearly and remember you always, loving woman of God.
Proverbs 31:29-31
“Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
