Growing up in a military family, Mike’s early years were marked by travel and adventure — from California to Minnesota, Okinawa, Virginia, New Mexico, and New Jersey — shaping his adaptability, discipline, and deep appreciation for people and cultures. He was the son of Colonel Robert J. Sunde, Sr., a U.S. Air Force officer, and proudly carried on his family’s tradition of military service.
A gifted athlete, Mike was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the summer of 1966. Though a car accident ended his dream of playing professional baseball, his resilient spirit and love for the game endured.
Mike entered the U.S. Air Force and served with distinction around the world. His assignments included Langley AFB (VA), Forbes AFB (KS), McChord AFB (WA), Dyess AFB (TX), Hurlburt Field (FL), and multiple tours in the Philippines. He was deployed to Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam multiple times and served at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand, where he maintained AC-130 Gunships during the Vietnam conflict. Throughout his career, he completed temporary duty assignments across Europe, South America, and Asia. He was a proud Vietnam veteran and devoted his life to service, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant and earning multiple commendations along the way.
Mike was the beloved husband of Ofelia, devoted father to Maria, and cherished “Papa” to his grandson Ryan. He found deep joy in being a grandfather—assembling planes with Ryan, watching football together, and making every moment feel special. A proud Minnesota Vikings fan, Mike never missed a chance to cheer on his team. He had a talent for making people laugh and a sincere interest in others. He loved learning where people were from, listening to their stories, and connecting through kindness, humor, and curiosity.
Mike will be remembered for his humility, service, strength, and the unconditional love he gave to those around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. For those who knew him, he would want nothing more than for you to carry his love, laughter, and stories forward.
We will be holding a committal service with full military honors at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery (552 US-1, Mims, FL 32754) on Friday, August 29th at 2:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather for a brief reception afterward — details to follow.
