Born in New York City on October 21, 1948, Raphael grew up in the vibrant heart of the Bronx, where his Puerto Rican heritage shaped his values, culture, and passions. With a deep love for language and learning, he dedicated his career to teaching Spanish at Truman High School and Clinton High School—leaving a lasting impression on generations of students.
His life was forever changed when he met Antonia Jirau, the mother of one of his students. Their bond quickly grew into a profound partnership grounded in faith and love. The two were married on September 28, 1997 and remained inseparable, supporting one another in faith and service.
Raphael and Antonia were active members of Immaculate Conception Church in the Bronx, participating deeply in the life of the parish before moving to Palm Bay in the early 2000s. There, Raphael continued his commitment to service—serving as a Eucharistic minister to the sick, and participating in Catholic prison ministry. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he gave freely of himself to support and uplift others.
A lover of Spanish novelas, salsa music, and traditional Spanish cuisine, Raphael found joy in the rhythms and flavors of his culture. El Bohio in the Bronx was his favorite spot, where the food reminded him of home and shared memories were made over every meal.
Raphael is survived by his loving wife, Antonia Hernandez; his step-sons, Carlos and Ricardo; his adored grandchildren, Alexander, Riyar, Raiya, Logan, and Ruby; his brother Alfred and sister-in-law Wanda; his niece Kristy and nephew Joseph. He will be remembered as a man of wisdom, warmth, and unwavering generosity.
His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched—with every word taught, prayer shared, and meal enjoyed. He will be deeply missed.
