at the age of 71. He died of natural causes with his daughter Alicia at his side and his other children, Michael and Mandy on their way. Al was born to Isabel and Albert Beerley on September 30, 1950 and grew up in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. He graduated from Penn State. He worked as an ironworker in Philadelphia as he began working on his dream of eventually having a career in aviation. He earned his private pilot’s license and became a flight instructor to build his hours and ratings.
He began his career as a commercial aviator working as a pilot for Wings Airways in Plymouth Meeting PA, then Bar Harbor Airlines, Piedmont Airlines, and eventually for US Airways. He flew as captain for US Airways for the next 30 years and later earned his helicopter license. He loved his work as a pilot and took great pride in it.
He was very charming, witty, and an unmatched force of nature. He lived his life fully, loved his dog, Bubba, and traveled to many corners of the world. More than anything, Al treasured time spent together with his loved ones, especially on the many trips he enjoyed with them.
Al is survived by his three children, Alicia, Mandy, and Michael, and was a proud “grandad” to his two granddaughters, Ava and Emma whom he deeply loved. He is also survived by his brother Thomas and sister Bonnie.
