Born March 21, 1943, in Philadelphia, he was the son of Nettie Dunn Berkowitz and Harry Berkowitz, both of whom predeceased him.
Barry is survived by his wife, Wendy Wexler Branton; his children, Jane (Suraj) Puttanniah, Douglas (Marisa Blau) Branton, and Michael (Amy Lisbon) Branton; his brother, Marvin Berkowitz; and his six grandchildren, Dylan, Cameron, Lilah, Ethan, Mira, and Ari. He was predeceased by his son Joshua.
Raised in the Overbrook Park neighborhood, Barry showed an early aptitude for mechanical problem-solving and practical ingenuity. He attended West Chester University, where he studied chemistry, but graduated from Pennsylvania State University. After graduating, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Barry began his professional career working for the State of Pennsylvania at State Employment before embarking on a long career in aerospace engineering. He served as a systems architect in the satellite division of General Electric Aerospace and remained with the organization through its later transitions to Martin Marietta and Lockheed Martin.
Barry was deeply devoted to his family and took great pride in his roles as husband, father, and grandfather. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and patience, often delighting his children and grandchildren with his warmth and gentle humor. He enjoyed building and fixing things alongside his children and, in later years, especially valued time spent with his grandchildren, whether through shared routines, quiet moments, or simply being together. Family was the center of his life.
Services will be held at Haym Solomon Memorial Park on December 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception at the family’s home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Barry’s memory to Radnor A Better Chance, an organization that was meaningful to Barry and Wendy, who served as host parents to a scholar from 1993 to 1997.
