Edward Hamilton Caterson — loving husband to Laura Caterson, father to his three children, Grandpa to eight beloved grandchildren — passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 76 years old, just six days short of his 77th birthday.
Ed was born on May 26, 1949, in Larchmont, New York, the son of Edward Caterson and Grace Quinn Caterson. He was a man of generous spirit who touched everyone whose path he crossed.
Ed attended Malvern Prep, earning three varsity letters, then captained the tennis team at Saint Joseph's University to a Division I championship, where he also met the love of his life, Laura. They married and spent the next 55 years building an extraordinary life together.
Upon graduation, Ed accepted his commission as an officer in the United States Air Force through ROTC and earned his master’s degree from Golden Gate University before returning to the Main Line to put down roots in Rosemont, then Berwyn and Devon. For more than 50 years, he poured himself into Rolled Steel Products, a family business his grandfather founded, his father helped develop, and which Ed helped grow.
Outside of work, Ed lived richly and fully. His love of tennis never left him; he and his father later competed as doubles partners, winning local tournaments for years. In later years, golf and bridge became his great passions; he ran the bridge club at both St. David's Golf Club and the Stone Harbor Yacht Club and once made a pilgrimage with his father and son to Scotland to play the oldest golf course in the world. Three generations on an ancient fairway said a lot about what mattered most to him.
A Phillies man to his core, Ed held season tickets for decades, knew every stat, and traveled to Florida for training. He coached all three of his children in youth sports and thought nothing of loading the family into a car for Maine ski trips, spring training, or a cross-country Winnebago adventure through the national parks.
From Memorial Day to Labor Day and beyond, Ed and his family spent nearly every summer weekend in Stone Harbor. This was Ed's happy place. Where family gathered to relax and enjoy time together. Whether it was playing card games on the back deck or body surfing in the waves, Stone Harbor is where many of life's happiest moments were shared with kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Throughout his life, Ed remained close to his Catholic faith. As a child he served as an altar server, and in his adult years he served as a Eucharist Minister at St. Monica's Church. He was proud of his three children's faith and took great joy in watching his grandchildren receive their sacraments over the years.
Ed loved his three children equally, completely, and without condition. A man who never let a family dinner check get away from him and if there was a deck of cards on the table, he was already shuffling.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Laura Caterson; his children Dana Zdancewicz (Jim) and their sons Linc, Rex, and Duke; Dr. E.J. Caterson (Dr. Stephanie) and their sons Ned, Henry, and Charlie; and Robin Dagostino (Aaron) and their children Dean and Paige. He is also survived by his sisters Patricia Rowley and Sheila Fehrenbach and their families.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Our Lady of the Assumption, 35 Old Eagle School Road, Wayne, PA 19087 on Friday May 29, 2026, beginning at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made in his grandson's honor to Operation Smile at the link below labelled donations.
