Lydia was born in Calabria, Italy to the late Eugenio and Giovanna Avorio. Her family immigrated to Chicago, Illinois when she was 2 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert Curtis Ellis and her daughter Karen Baxter Rodman. She is survived by her immediate family, son Richard John Ellis and daughter-in-law Debbie of Fredericksburg, Texas; and her daughter Cindy Ellis Roach and son-in-law Tim of Devon, Pennsylvania. She is the cherished grandmother of Emily Baxter (Texas) and Garrett & Justin Roach (Pennsylvania). She is the loving sister of the late Josephine Avorio, Virginia (the late Louis) Izzi, the late Tony Avorio, the late Mary (the late Angelo) Petrungaro and the late Albena Avorio.
Lydia was a kind person who was loved by all who knew her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed playing tennis at Onion Creek Club in Austin, Texas until her mid-eighties and playing ping pong into her nineties. She loved listening to music and dancing. She was very active and always wanted to know “what are we doing now?” Her infectious smile and spirit will be greatly missed. Lydia is a member of the American Rosie the Riveter Association for her work during the war with the Pullman Company in Chicago, Illinois.
The family wishes to especially thank all of her friends and caregivers who loved and cared for her.
The memorial will be private by the request of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org
