Paul E. Macht

February 28, 1927 – January 7, 2021

Paul E. Macht passed away peacefully at his home in Devon, PA surrounded by his family. Paul was born and raised in the Frankford section of Philadelphia by his parents Elmer Lawrence Macht and Lydia Riedmiller. His favorite childhood memories were of spending summers with his parents and brothers, Walter and Larry, on their family farm in Oley, PA. After graduating from Germantown Friends School in 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Army Air Forces Division within occupied Germany until 1946. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in economics in 1949. His career with Sun Oil Company as an international oil trader saw him rise to the level of Vice President of Crude Oil operations and culminated as President of Sun International Limited in Bermuda from which he retired in 1983. Paul continued working for several years as an independent consultant in the oil industry and served as the President of the Thayer Corporation, a charitable foundation, from 1997 until his death.

Although Paul was known by all for his sophisticated understanding of the business world, his heart and priority in life were his family. He married Jean Hill Macht in 1949 and was blessed with three children Paul, Becky and Martha. After their marriage ended, he was fortunate to meet and then marry Elizabeth M. Macht, his wife of thirty-one years. Paul (or “Pops” as he was affectionately called) became a loyal father to his three stepchildren, Rick, Katharine and Carolyn. Paul nurtured and loved all of his six children and took special interest in mentoring each of their lives. The family shared many special times together including summer vacations on Panther Pond in Maine. After Elizabeth’s death he was lucky in love once more and spent the next twenty plus years with his dedicated and loving partner Sandra B. Jones. Paul embraced Sandy’s children and grandchildren in his loving way, creating and enriching even more family ties.

Paul believed in the importance of keeping active in both body and mind. He enjoyed long walks with his golden retrievers, golf, boating, traveling the world, and playing tennis until the age of 92. He was an avid reader, Philadelphia sports fan, astute follower of current events, a bridge enthusiast, playing until the week before his death. Family and friends were captivated by his charismatic smile and infectious laugh and will fondly remember his rendering of Tony Bennett’s I Left My Heart in San Francisco sung with a twinkle in his eye. Paul was a man of exacting routine, always impeccably dressed, admired by all for his charm and regarded as a true gentleman.

He is survived by: his son Paul E. Macht Jr. and wife Linda of Rydal, PA; his daughters Rebecca Gorman and husband Marshall of Freehold, NJ, Martha Sliwinski, PhD and husband Jack Greagori of Forked River, NJ; his stepchildren Richard Snape (deceased) and wife Annette of New York, NY, Katharine Fox of Peterborough, NH, and Carolyn Snape of Media, PA; his grandchildren Kyle Macht and wife Gretchen, Alexander Macht, Jessica McKenzie and husband Bennett, Colin Gorman, Brian Sliwinski and wife Lauren Huntington, Mark Sliwinski and wife Kristin, Lauren Jones and husband Ryan, Alex Snape, Daniel Fox, and Damien Osbourne; his great grandchildren Evalyn Macht, Adelaide Macht, Annabelle McKenzie, Hailey Sliwinski, and Madison Sliwinski. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren and his loving extended family through Sandy Jones.

Due to the current pandemic, a memorial service will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Germantown Friends School (https://www.germantownfriends.org/support-gfs/give-online) in memory of Paul E. Macht.
