Born on June 1, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, to Peter and Irene Keon, Tom spent his formative years in Campbells Bay, Quebec, and Pembroke, Ontario, alongside his beloved sisters Barbara, Margaret, and Marie and favorite horse, Billy.
From a young age, Tom was known for his quiet strength, sharp intellect, and a deep sense of integrity that would guide him throughout his life. He attended Saint Patrick’s College in Ottawa, where his love for science and learning blossomed. He began his career teaching high school chemistry in Almonte, Ontario, earning the respect of colleagues and students alike not only for his knowledge but for his kindness and fairness. In 1959, he met Janice Lahue, the love of his life. Their marriage of 63 years was a true partnership, rooted in mutual respect, devotion, and deep affection. Together they raised three children—Peter, Elizabeth, and Tim—instilling in them the same values that Tom quietly lived every day.
In 1965, Tom earned his medical degree from the University of Ottawa, following a calling to serve others through medicine. He went on to specialize in pediatric anesthesiology and dedicated the majority of his career to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where he served with the Pediatric Critical Care Unit. His leadership there spanned 25 years, during which he became known not just for his clinical excellence but for his calm presence, ethical compass, and unwavering humility. He never sought recognition, preferring instead to let his actions speak—and they spoke volumes. Tom was the kind of doctor families and children trusted instinctively, and the kind of colleague who inspired by example.
Though deeply committed to his profession, Tom found joy and balance in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid golfer, always happy to spend a morning at Overbrook Golf course, enjoying the game and the company of friends. His Irish heritage was a lifelong source of pride and joy. He was drawn to the music, literature, and landscape of Ireland, and cherished every chance to connect with its culture and spirit.
Tom’s humility was matched by a steady, enduring sense of purpose. He never lost sight of what truly mattered—family, compassion, and doing what was right, even when no one was watching. He had a gentle humor, a generous heart, and a deep capacity for empathy that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his beloved wife Janice; his children Peter, Elizabeth, and Tim; and six grandchildren—three granddaughters Kailey, Brinley and Ella and three grandsons, Tom, Will and Finnegan —who brought him endless pride and joy. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Barbara, and many dear friends and family members.
