Claudia Marie Umland, 78, of Weeping Water, Nebraska left us peacefully on May 9, 2026 surrounded by her family. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, Claudia will always be remembered for her kindness and willingness to help those in need.
Born on August 24, 1946 in Sioux City, Iowa. Claudia was born to Clarence and Anna Mae (Lewis)Spencer. She was the youngest of the two children and never let her sister, Fern, forget that fact. As Claudia would admit, she was always the more rambunctious one and was more of an outdoor, adventurer type.
Claudia was raised in Sioux City and lived there until moving to LaVista in 1975 and soon after began attending dental hygienist school and made that her career. She worked in a 2-person dental office. Just the dentist and her. Besides being the hygienist and surgery tech, she was also the secretary, appt scheduler, bookkeeper, and the cleaning person on the weekends. She would often take her boys to help deep clean and sanitize the office. When the Dentist retired, Claudia got out of the dental industry and worked at Greyhound Bus Lines Information Center. She worked there for 5 years and was the Union Steward. That job ended in 1989 when they went on strike. Claudia and Tom opened a small business in Nebraska City, The Sport Shop, and that kept them both busy until their retirements. Later they traveled around Japan and then lived in China for 4 years while Tom taught language school there. Finally returning to the US to enjoy their grandkids and settle down.
On June 29, 1991, Claudia married the love of her life, Tom Umland. The two shared a romance that would last 34 years that would yield a lifetime of memories.
Claudia is survived by her husband, Tom Umland of Weeping Water, and sons Rodney, Shane (Lisa), Jay (Ann), and Rich Parker (Jesse), as well as her grandchildren Jenny, Amber, Brittany, Zach, Alyssa, Jayson, Jacob, Hannah, Callen, and Alex. Great-Grandchildren are Makena, Mystica, Rain, Jesse, and Kayden.
