

Donald Allison Sliffe was born on November 26, 1931, and passed away on February 24, 2026, at the age of 94. A beloved, brave, devoted, generous, hard-working, honest, kind-hearted, selfless, thoughtful, and wise man, Donald’s life was marked by steady service, deep love for family, and a spirit that lifted those around him. He was a resident of Papillion, Nebraska. From the beginning, he carried himself with quiet strength and a warm-hearted presence that made others feel at home.
Donald began first grade at five years old in Archie, Missouri. At five and a half, he and his parents moved to Loveland, Colorado, where he later graduated from Loveland High School at 17. He started college before entering the Air Force, and his lifelong commitment to learning never faded. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business from UNO, went on to receive an Education degree from Buena Vista College, and was certified to teach in both Iowa and Nebraska. In 1983, he completed his studies at Metropolitan Technical Community College, graduating with honors in Practical Nursing—another reflection of his thoughtful, selfless desire to serve and care for others.
Donald devoted 29 years, 4 months, and 19 days to the United States Air Force, retiring on June 30, 1980. His military career was distinguished, and he was recognized with numerous honors, including the Bronze Star, AF Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, AF Longevity Service Ribbon, National Defence Service Medal, 3 Bronze star//AF Outstanding Unit Award 2 olc, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medals, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. His service reflected the same loyal, resilient character that defined his life at home—steady, courageous, and grounded in purpose.
Donald and his wife shared nearly 70 years together. She passed away on March 25, 2025, and their anniversary was July 8th. Together they built a family rooted in devotion and love. They had three children: Gary, Susan, and John (John passed away 8 days after his birth). Donald’s legacy continues through his grandchildren, Mike Smith, David Smith, Kristy Sliffe Zimmerman, and John Sliffe, and through his great-grandchildren, Logan Smith, Kiley Zimmerman, Lacey Smith, Connor Smith, Westin Zimmerman, Harper Smith and Everly Zimmerman.
A gentle and generous soul, Donald loved horses and everything to do with the acreage, finding joy in the work and peace of open space. He also loved Bronco football, and his humorous, upbeat spirit made even ordinary days feel brighter. In faith and community, he gave of himself faithfully—singing in the church choir for many years, offering his voice and heart in service alongside others.
Visitation will be held at Kahler Dolce Mortuary, 441 North Washington Street, Papillion, Nebraska on Monday, March 2, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A Memorial Service will follow at 6:00 pm.
