Shirley Ann Cloyd, a beloved and cherished soul, passed away on December 1, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on March 27, 1939, Shirley was a compassionate, generous, hard-working, and kind-hearted individual who was known for her quick wit and zest for life. She resided in Omaha, Nebraska, where she touched the lives of many with her thoughtful nature.
Shirley's early years began in Milford, Nebraska. She was raised on a farm near Blair, Nebraska, with her mother and grandparents. Her childhood was marked by frequent moves, attending several grade schools before graduating from Omaha South High School.
Her career was a testament to her dedication and work ethic. Shirley worked at Phillip's Department Store during her high school years, followed by over 20 years at Sinclair Oil, and an impressive 38 years at ConAgra. After retiring, she devoted her time to volunteering at the nursing home where her husband and mother resided. She also enjoyed putting together puzzles, especially those featuring deer, which she lovingly framed for her grandson Jake.
In 1972, Shirley married Donald Cloyd, and together they built a beautiful family. She was the proud mother to Diane (Mike) Benak, grandmother to Jake and Josh, and great-grandmother to Bryer, born in August 2025. Her family was her greatest achievement, and she embodied the "gold star" standard in her roles as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her legacy of putting family first will continue to be cherished by those she loved.
Shirley had a passion for socializing and was the life of the party wherever she went. Whether playing cards on a Friday night, enjoying country music at the legion, or following Joseph Hall, an Elvis Presley impersonator, Shirley was surrounded by friends and laughter. Her infectious spirit and love for others were evident in all her interactions.
Active in her community, Shirley was a familiar face at Friends on Q, Don & Millie's, her church, Bible study group, Mama's Pizza, and Sunday brunches. Her positive impact on those around her was undeniable, as she lived life to the fullest and loved unconditionally.
Expressions of gratitude pour out from those who knew Shirley well. As an only child, she valued her friendships deeply, and her friends provided unwavering support throughout her life. Shirley's appreciation for this love and compassion was immense, and she felt truly blessed by the connections she made.
In her own words, Shirley often said, "It is what it is," "F*** it," and "I can't help it." These sayings perfectly encapsulate her lighthearted and carefree approach to life. She encouraged everyone to live fully, love deeply, and not sweat the small stuff.
Although there was no chance to say goodbye, Shirley's farewell message to us all would likely be to focus on the people and things that bring joy, as life is too short to do otherwise. Her legacy of love and laughter will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 9th from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Messiah Lutheran Church, 5015 S 80th St, Ralston; followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 am.
