Waldemar Hoppe, 94, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on April 10, 2026. Born on August 30, 1931, Wally lived a long life marked by perseverance, faith, and deep devotion to the people he loved. His friends and family will remember him as generous, kind and humorous.
Wally grew up in Poland and Germany during World War II, before immigrating to Canada as a teenager to work on his uncle's farm. Those early years shaped his steady spirit and his ability to meet life with gratitude and determination.
In Canada, Wally spent his time working on his uncle's farm and with the Canadian Forestry Service. After moving to the United States he worked for Skagway Drugs, which eventually became Osco Drugs. He retired in 1999 after more than 37 years of service to the company – a testament to his loyalty, work ethic, and pride in doing things well.
Wally married Regina Pitschmann in June 1961 and built the family home in Omaha. He was the proud father of two children: Mary (spouse Bryan), and Brian (spouse Carrie). He was also a devoted grandfather to two granddaughters, Megan and Kate, who were truly the apples of his eye. Family was extremely important to Wally, and he made sure the people he loved felt it through his presence, his support, and his steady care.
A man of simple joys and bright interests, Wally enjoyed science fiction and loved to spoil all his grand dogs through the years. He always had treats hidden in various pockets for any pooch he might come across in his travels. He also liked attempting to propagate random plants and enjoyed gardening with his daughter – small moments that became lasting memories. In his younger years he tended to the rose garden at Memorial Park with his friend Richard Ulmer, volunteered at church events, and could be found at every soccer match, basketball game or school play to cheer on his granddaughters.
Wally was devoted to St. Paul Lutheran Church, which later merged with other congregations to form River of Life Church. Religion was an important aspect of his life, and his faith helped guide the way he lived his life and treated others.
Wally was always quick with a smile and a laugh. His positive demeanor is what people will remember most about him. Many will miss Wally's wonderful smile and occasional jokes, but even more, they will carry forward the lightness and kindness he brought into ordinary days.
Wally, it was an honor having you in our lives. Thank you for sharing your love, laughter and wisdom along the way.
