Earl Emerson Clegg departed this life May 13, 2020 at his residence. He was born March 27, 1926 at Universal, Pa., the eldest son of the late Heber S. Clegg and Gladys Cline Clegg. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years Dolores Mae Clegg, two sons, John Earl Clegg and Clifford Alan Clegg and son-in-law, Dr. Robert LaRocque. Also preceding him in death were a sister, Ruth E. Clegg and two brothers, Heber Wayne Clegg and Paul Richard Clegg. Surviving are two children, Russell Dale (Kathy) Clegg of Mineral Wells and Beverly J. LaRocque of Parkersburg, two daughters in law, Dolores J. Clegg of Parkersburg and Terry Clegg of Basye, Virginia, a sister, Jean Seabolt of Clearwater, Florida, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He was a 1943 graduate of Parkersburg High School where he participated in FFA winning the WV State Public Speaking contest in his senior year. He also was a member of Masque & Gavel honorary, the Speech Club and Student Council. After graduation, while awaiting induction into the US Navy, he served a brief stint as the Sports Editor of The Parkersburg News, In the Navy he served on the LST 125 as Gunners Mate 3rd Class earning 5 battle stars for actions at Guam, The Admiralty Islands, Lingayen Gulf, Okinawa Invasion and Leyte Gulf, the biggest Naval battle in history. He returned home in 1946, attended Mountain State College and began courting the love of his life, Dolores Anderson, whom he married on July 2, 1948. He worked 32 years at Dupont Washington Works where he served as Foreman fielding the first all-female crew known as “Earl’s Angels”. He was a member of the Parkersburg Seventh Day Adventist Church where he served as Head Elder. He enjoyed camping and fishing and was an avid hunter. He especially enjoyed hunting with Gary Simmons and Oris Seabolt. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, the LST Association and VFW Post 1212. Special thanks to Housecalls Hospice Staff, especially the Veterans who visited him and honored his WWII service. Memorial contributions may be made to the WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana or The Veteran’s Charity of your choice. Graveside service will be Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memory Gardens with Pastor Daniel Morikone officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. The family requests that visitors obey the Social Distancing Rules while attending.
