Born in Hawera, New Zealand, Doug was the second youngest of 7 children.
Doug lived a life of adventure! He completed his apprenticeship as a Joiner/Cabinet Maker, and shortly after, at the age of 21, he travelled overseas with good friends. He explored Europe and spent time working in the UK. His travels continued to Canada where he settled in the Kitchener/Waterloo area and met Edna, the love of his life.
After marrying, they returned to New Zealand to raise a family and lived in the small close knit community of Ohope Beach. The adventure continued with lots of camping, beach time and some memorable overseas trips with his wife and kids – including Disneyland, Hong Kong and a month in a camper van touring the UK. With itchy feet, in 1979, Doug brought his family back to Canada and settled in Cambridge, Ontario amongst many old friends again. Doug retired as a gear cutter from True Gear and Spline, then moved to Parkville with Edna for the final chapter of his life.
Doug enjoyed 25 years in Parkville and built a great network of friends. His love for travel continued, with many visits back to New Zealand and other adventures including China, Europe, and Australia. He was active in the Newcomers club, led walking groups and put his passion for driving to use as a part time shuttle driver at the Ford dealership in Parksville. He was always happy behind the wheel and often said he could have easily had a career as a bus driver – he enjoyed discovering new roads and areas on the island. He loved a good game of euchre or crib which brought many friends and family together.
Doug loved people. You couldn’t cross paths with Doug, without him chatting you up and getting your life story, while sharing his.
Doug embraced the motto – LIVE LOVE LAUGH. He will be dearly missed by family and friends from around the globe.
An open-house gathering to celebrate Doug’s life will be held at his home on Saturday, November 29th from 1:00 – 3:00. Please email [email protected] if you can attend.
