announce his passing on February 21, 2023 after a recent diagnosis of cancer. He passed away
peacefully in Palliative Care surrounded by family and immersed in love.
Garry is survived by his brothers Robert and Benny (Dawn Ishii), his sister Susan (Anthony
Ciammaichella), niece Tiana, and nephew, Mateo. He is predeceased by his Mother, Jean, and
Father, John. Garry had a special relationship with his other ‘nephew’, Chico, the dog. Even
though he wasn’t his owner, everyone knew, Chico loved him the most!
Garry was born on March 21, 1963 in Duncan and he was a proud Vancouver Islander, growing
up in Port Alberni and Parksville. He attended school in those communities and continued with
his studies at VIU in Nanaimo. He enjoyed different work opportunities and spent time in the
hospitality and customer service industries.
Garry had a gentle spirit and a peaceful soul. Generous to family and friends, he would share
his abundant gift of kindness with those in need. His selflessness was never more evident than
when he helped care for his Father.
Garry had a cheeky personality and a wonderful sense of humour. He couldn’t play the piano
but that didn’t stop him from trying. Extended family concerts would usually result in demands
for refunds. Garry was a bit of a ‘foodie’ and his cooking skills ranged from questionable to
pretty darn good. There were many cooking ‘contests’, the results of which, are still in dispute.
Beyond spending time with family, Garry was forever working on his cars, and like Garry, they
had an inherent and amazing beauty ‘under the hood’. Those memories and so many more, will
be cherished by his family and friends. Garry reciprocated the love he received. He will be
greatly missed, but his memories will live on.
Special thanks to the amazing team in Palliative Care whose kind and sensitive delivery of care
was very much appreciated and made this journey a gentle and memorable one.
A private family celebration of life will be scheduled in Port Alberni. In lieu of flowers, please
consider donating in Garry’s memory to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Palliative Care Unit
