Hans was born in 1933 in Crossen an der Oder, Germany, to Gertrude Zwillus and Johann Plowens. He grew up alongside one brother and two sisters during a time of profound upheaval. From these early years, Hans emerged with a quiet strength, a tireless work ethic, and a steadfast spirit that guided his life.
In 1956, seeking new beginnings and greater opportunity, Hans left Germany and made his way to Canada. He first settled in Vancouver before planting roots in the community of Errington on Vancouver Island in 1975. There, he built a life grounded in perseverance, craftsmanship, and a deep devotion to family.
A skilled woodworker by trade, Hans brought care and precision to everything he touched. He believed in doing things well and doing them right—a belief he passed on to his children, along with the values of integrity, responsibility, and determination. He was a man of principle and quiet strength; he spoke often with purpose, his words marked by wisdom and weight.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Norma, who passed in 1994, Hans never remarried. Her memory remained with him always, carried with quiet devotion for the rest of his days.
Survived by his children, Susan Forrest (Bianca Filser) and Richard Plowens (Christine Gapp), each of whom reflects the legacy their father leaves behind: resilience, resourcefulness, and a deep sense of what is right. Hans also leaves behind his granddaughter, Gaby Plowens (Eric Byram), who brought light, pride, and much joy to his later years.
Hans found his deepest peace in the garden & nature. He loved the quiet rhythm of the land and taught his children not only how to care for it, but how to witness its beauty—to work with patience, to move with intention, and to find meaning in simple acts.
In his final days, there was peace. The peace of a life well lived on his own terms, and with quiet dignity. He did his best, always.
A private family gathering will be held to honour his life. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a cause close to your heart—or plant a tree or flower in his memory. Hans would have loved that.
