Jim passed away peacefully at his home in Qualicum Beach, BC on Tuesday April 9, 2024 in his 85 th year. Jim was born to the late Theodore Nelson and Irene Mary (nee Buchanan) Belden in Winnipeg on September 6, 1939. Devoted partner to Gabrielle Phillips of over forty years and doting father to their daughter Caleigh (Jeff) Barth of Courtenay, BC. Jim leaves his beloved daughters Stacy of Lake Rosseau and Shelly of Tobermory, Ontario. He was a steadfast brother to Geoff (Sharon) and brother-in-law to Elaine (Peggy Hayes). A dedicated family man, deeply loved by his grandchildren who Jim cherished with all his heart: Dylan (Kate), Emma, Aiden, Alexander, Jake and Sadie. Jim also leaves his stepson Andrew Mackison and kids (Ashlyn and Owen) and his nephew Trevor, his wife, Ana and kids (Geoffrey and Jasie) and many dear friends scattered across the Continent.
After an adventurous childhood in Winnipeg, Jim moved to Toronto with his eye on a career in finance. Along the way, he earned a master’s degree in economics from McMaster University. Jim’s profession as an investment advisor was marked by his keen insight and unwavering support for gold as an investment he believed in with fervor. He most recently noted his disappointment at not being able to witness its eventual peak – demonstrating his unique blend of humor and persistence.
Jim left the Big Smoke to enjoy the tranquility of the Beaver Valley. He loved working with his local clients and becoming part of the Owen Sound community, including through his volunteer work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grey Bruce. An avid outdoorsman, Jim enjoyed all the seasons; skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, playing squash, gardening, hiking and golfing whenever he could. Jim had a deep connection with Nature and revered most of God’s creatures (black squirrels, not so much!).
After shoveling his full share of Owen Sound snow, Jim and Gabrielle moved in 2016 to the warmer climes of Qualicum Beach. He loved experiencing the flora and fauna of the West Coast and quickly took to all the nearby trails, often accompanied by Caleigh’s young family, including Henley, the family dog. These times were a source of joy and reflection for him, revealing the depth of his character and his appreciation for life’s simple beauties.
Equally, Jim enjoyed the written word. He read extensively with a particular affinity for history, historical fiction and classic poetry. Known for his quick wit, witticisms and able recall of lengthy verses. Also known for his more lengthy, sometimes novel- worthy and always earnest emails. Jim was our renaissance man, sporting his Panama hat and linen pants in the summer (his toque and long underwear in the winter). By his engagement with the business world, social world and natural world, one could imagine Jim thriving in any era! A chivalrous, gentle man, we could count on Jim to be an excellent host, a role he served diligently over the decades! He could see the subtle in the blatant, the calm in the storm, the story in the next adventure, the warmth coming in the next smile. Jim will be profoundly missed but never forgotten. In his memory let us find joy in the pages of favored books, solace in the beauty of a peaceful walk in the woods and comfort in the precious time spent with loved ones….and if you will… enjoy, “a martini on the rocks, very dry, three olives, in a rocks glass” and recall Jim reciting one his favored verses.
We acknowledge our deepest gratitude to Palliative Care Dr. Susan Hunter, whose dedication and compassionate care profoundly impacted Jim’s final months. Dr. Hunter’s unwavering support & kindness brought comfort not only to Jim but also to his family during this difficult time. We are sincerely thankful for her expertise & heartfelt dedication. Profound thanks to Dr. Meaghan Towers, whose support & dedication enabled Jim’s passage to be peaceful and with dignity. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place in the Beaver Valley in the coming months. To further honor Jim, plant a tree, support a nature conservancy or donate to Doctors without Borders/Medicins sans Frontieres (www.doctorswithoutborders.org)
