After a courageous battle following a stroke, surrounded by love at her care home in Parksville, Marg Rogers peacefully drifted off to a better place. Just a few weeks previous, she had finished celebrating Christmas and New Year’s surrounded by family and friends. Her passing also came three months shy of her 93rd birthday. The world lost a beautiful woman at that moment.
Born in Bassano, Alberta and into a large family that had immigrated from Scotland, Marg was in her mid-teens when she happened to cross paths with her soon-to-be husband, Mike Rogers while he was playing baseball in Bassano. Her brilliant blue eyes drew Mike's attention immediately, and the rest is history. They eventually married and moved to Victoria to work and ultimately raise their six children living in the Lake Hill area of Saanich.
Marg was kept busy shuttling her three daughters to dance or basketball or picking up the boys from hockey or baseball. Aside from driving from one activity to another she also ensured weekends were focused on family and many times included wonderful picnics that she prepared at Island View Beach.
She started her office career at Bapco Paint, followed by time in administration with the Ministry of Health, and then landed at Farmer Construction. When the opportunity arose in the early 70's, she joined her husband as the office manager for Rogers Mechanical Contracting in Victoria.
Outside of work, she loved to take the grandchildren on car trips, and they lovingly referred to her as "Hot-Rod Nana".
Marg loved golf and spent many years as a member of Arbutus Ridge where they had moved after retirement. She was passionate about organizing amateur golf tournaments for senior women on the Island and spent two terms as president of women's golf at Arbutus Ridge. She was awfully proud to get a hole-in-one on her home course and her active participation in the sport continued until the fall of 1992, at 89 years old, though she did manage to find her way back to the course many times to cheer and encourage others.
In her later years, Marg joined the Order of Eastern Star following the path of her mother and joining one of her daughters who is also part of Eastern Star. The members talked at length about Marg's beautiful smile that glowed for everyone she met.
Marg was predeceased by her husband Mike; sister May; Brothers Charlie, Jack and Gordon; son Nick, and granddaughter Shannon as well as many other family members and numerous lifelong friends.
She is survived by daughters Cheryl (Mike), Lynda (Dave), Donna; and sons Dan (Linda), and Michael as well as by adoring grandchildren Sean, Jesse, Ryan (Nicole), Rob, Lindsey, Alana, Dustin (Kelly), Derrick, Aaron, Dylan, Morgan, Kendel, Mike (Jessica), Amanda, Branden, and Michelle (Shaun).
She also had numerous loving great grandchildren including Desmond, Sawyer, Kassian, West, Mckegan, Adler, Evan, Addison, Lexi, Sophia, Zachary, and Rocco.
A celebration of her and Mike's lives is scheduled May 8th at Royal Oak Cemetery.
Instead of flowers donations would be gratefully accepted in Marg's name to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation.
