

She was predeceased by her parents, Johannes and Edith Specht, and her husband, Barry Alger. She is survived by her brothers, Gerd Specht (Ilona) of Nanoose Bay, and Hans Specht (Karen) of Qualicum Beach, as well as nieces and nephews.
A talented athlete, Rita played basketball throughout her junior and senior high school years and competed at the collegiate level for the University of Alberta Pandas. In her youth, she was also an active member of her church, participating in music programs and youth activities.
Rita graduated with a degree in Education in 1979 and dedicated her professional life to teaching Junior High Physical Education, Math, and Science. In 1981, she married Barry Alger. Together, they built a home in Edmonton and shared a love for walking their dogs, attending hockey games, and traveling the world. Rita was a gourmet cook and loved working in her garden. Her flower pots, in particular, were a real work of art.
Upon retirement in 2011, Rita moved to Vancouver Island and attended the Parksville Baptist Church. She was able to spend four years enjoying the beaches and riding motorbikes before Barry's passing. Rita faced various health challenges over the following ten years before passing away peacefully on April 17, 2026.
