My Grandmother will always hold a special place in my heart. She was an incredibly strong women who I am so lucky to say helped shaped me into the women I am today. The story of her life is not a simple tale but one of over coming many obstacles in order to raise an amazing family, live a fulfilling life and enjoying some of the best parts of it with the love of her life, my Step Grandfather, Alexander Slider (RIP Sept ‘13). Apart from her unfailing love, I will always remember her strength and will to voice what she felt was right. She is a true Scottish treasure. 

Although it breaks my heart she passed away less then three months before meeting her second great grandson, her lessons, stories and example will be with me always, passing them along to my son.

You will always be in my heart and the hearts of those you touched along your journey.

My dear grandmother has been a huge influence on my life in so many ways, I don’t know who I’d be without her. 

She was a strong, dynamic, intelligent woman. An orphan at a young age, she grew up fending for herself in Scotland, and as a young woman was part of the war effort in the Women’s Timber Corps. She fought for decades to get recognition for the women in her brigade and finally won that battle. She came to Canada as a still young woman as a war bride marrying my grandfather, an Irish Newfoundlander, and they had five children here. Her life was full and rich and hard at times. She wrote and published stories much of her life and I grew up enthralled with her storytelling. I remember so many nights up late at the foot of her chair, transported by her words into other lands and times. When I think about how to tell a good story, I think of her. Images, sounds, and smells are emblazoned on my memory of the places she took me with her words.

It’s a terrible time to loose her, not to be able to go to her. To be isolated from family. To want to grieve together. Not to be able to have gone to her bedside. 

May the road rise up to meet you grandma, and may God keep you. I love you. You will be with me forever and always.

In this time of isolation, I am heavy hearted by the loss of our Mother, through natural causes. The pain feels even deeper because of the conditions of this restricted isolation, for family members to attend their loved one’s bedside. Fortunately, my eldest Sister was granted a short visit to see her in her last days. My mother was a remarkable woman who served in the "Women's Timber Corp.", part of the "Women's Land Army" in Scotland during the War. My Father married her at nineteen, and brought her to Canada, as a "War Bride" in 1946. She leaves five children, eleven Grandchildren, and one Great Grand Child. One more Great Grandchild coming in June. She held many roles in her life, wrote her memoirs, and fought for the service recognition for her "Forgotten Women's Timber Corp”, She achieved recognition for her Corp through letters and her own website. The Queen approved and issued a special medal for her Corp., and a statute was commissioned by the Scottish Forestry Commission, and was placed in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, near Aberfoyle Scotland. She was so proud, as were the other remaining women in the Corp. The BBC Radio Station in London flew her to Scotland for an Interview. To me she was just my Mom. She held many roles in my life and was always a safe haven form any storms, and a voice of wisdom. I have many wonderful memories. Rest in peace dearest Mother.

My mother. My lifeline. Intuitive, witty, and uncannily wise!  Feeling adrift in a boat without an anchor. A true traditional mother I have been fortunate to have in my life so long. Warm comforting healing hands, always a warm smile, wise word, and as a child, sometimes warm cookies with milk or hot cocoa. Always a champion for children and fairness in life. She took her role as mother very seriously and said it is the most important job you will ever have, urging me to stay home to raise my own children, as she had done. She gave all of her children 100% of her heart unconditionally and kept us all her priority her whole life, always available for a heart-to-heart chat.  Her laughter, lovely Scottish voice and bright shining eyes will shine forever in my heart. Forever loved and missed, and as you used to say, I ❤️will be... Always your baby, Heather 

To my wee Scottish Mother. Forever in my heart. 💔The most loyal and loving mother a child could ever have.  She was the most wonderful Mother who wanted to be the Mother she lost at 4.  She was a terrific story teller and became a well known writer.
