It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Sylvia Rose Lyons Hahn. Sylvia passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 13, 2026.
Sylvia was born on September 17, 1934, in the Borough of Stepney, London, England, to George Cornelius Lyons and Martha Lyons (née Hemmings). She spent her formative years in London before immigrating to Canada on November 6, 1957, arriving in Vancouver, British Columbia. Canada became her cherished home, and she became a Canadian citizen in 1969.
In Vancouver, Sylvia met the love of her life, Garry Hahn. They were married on October 3, 1959, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 60 years. In 1960, they relocated to Vancouver Island, residing in various communities including Yaku Bay, Camp Five, Campbell River, Tofino, Ucluelet, and ultimately Parksville, where Sylvia lived for the past three decades. It was quite a transition from the metropolis of London to a small logging camp, but she quickly adapted whether being on a fishing boat or having to order groceries a month in advance to be delivered by boat. Her resourcefulness made her an accomplished cook who could create a meal from whatever ingredients were available.
Sylvia was predeceased by her beloved husband Garry, her parents, her brothers-in-law Dick and Harvey Hahn ( Sylvia) and Sam Telosky, and her sister-in-law Maureen Lyons.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: son Guy (Shirley), and daughters Shelley and Meredith. She also leaves behind her brother Alan Lyons; her sisters-in-law Doreen Telosky and Marilyn Hahn; her grandchildren Guinevere Howes, Jessica Docksteader, and Jon Palen (Norma); and her great-granddaughter Lily Docksteader. Sylvia will also be deeply missed by her many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close family friend Debbie Carlson.
.
Sylvia was an avid reader with a lifelong intellectual curiosity. In her later years she found great enjoyment in travelling with her daughters and often drew meaningful connections between her journeys and the books she had read.
A woman of deep faith, Sylvia was a devoted Jehovah’s Witness. Her steadfast beliefs were a source of strength, comfort, and wisdom, and she touched many lives through her kindness, conviction, and gentle guidance.
She will be remembered for her quiet strength, curious nature, and enduring love for her family.
