Vera Calhoun age 90 passed away on October 24, 2025 at Victoria Royal Jubilee Hospice.
Those who knew her will remember her generosity, and the joy she brought to her home of 35 years at Dowler Place in Victoria caring for the massive gardens, she volunteered countless hours to this project. Her knowledge of gardening she passed on to us; we are so thankful for all we have learned from her. She also volunteered over a decade at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in the imaging department.
Vera left home at the age of 15 where she found work at a nearby hotel as a server. She was later joined by her sister Ann and together they sent money home to their parents to help support the family. She married at age 17 and settled in several provinces in the eastern part of Canada as her husband was in the military. Eventually they were stationed in France and then Belgium for several years. She was blessed with three daughters. Vera earned her high school diploma and went on to take a tax preparation program and worked preparing tax returns.
Vera was happiest in her garden and was well known for her delicious apple pie and famous for her green soup. She loved to read and was very active and aware of current events. She believed in all things organic from foods to making her own compost. Vera was a very strong independent woman . Vera was very particular and never shied away from voicing her opinions.
Vera is survived by her daughters Kimberley of Ontario and Martie of Nanaimo, BC. Along with three grandchildren, one great grandson, and multiple generations of nieces and nephews who will miss her very much. Sadly Vera is preceded in death by her oldest daughter Connie.
Vera’s favourite quote ” For every problem under the son there is a solution, if you can’t find it never mind it. “
Think of her when you are enjoying a walk in a garden or better yet planting in one or even enjoying a wee sip of southern comfort in a china teacup. To honour her memory, plant a tree or plant of some kind or consider gifting a plant to someone you love in her memory.
Our hearts are overwhelmed with gratitude for the excellent care and kindness received from the staff and volunteers of Royal Jubilee Hospice.
Many thanks to the nieces and nephews who visited her in Hospice and were present as she passed away.
