

Joe grew up in Houston primarily Magnolia Park and Denver Harbor neighborhoods. His life was marked by the love he gave and the Love he received. A devoted father, grandfather, brother, father-in- law, uncle and a dedicated friend.
He attended Milby High School and later served in the Vietnam War (1966-1968) as a Sgt. E-5 from Company B, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry 198 Brigade. His medals included Expert on M-79, National Defense Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and O/S Bars. All with an Honorable Discharge.
Joe was also a member of The American Legion Post 472 in Houston.
Joe worked and retired as an Electrician through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW Local 716.
Joe is predeceased by his parents, Joe and Carlota Mata; Sister Velma Mata Orzabal; Brother Daniel (Danny) Mata.
Joe is survived by His son, Christopher and wife Amanda, granddaughter Gracie and grandson Lane Mata; Sister, Carmen Mata Ayala (Lucio), brothers Tommy R. Mata, Richard Mata (Lupe), Michael Mata (Pamela), Laura Mata, Widow Danny Mata. Many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends including his lifelong friends since adolescence, Isaac and Rachel Coronado, Isaac Ybarra and wife Norma, Tommy and Sheila Torres, Gloria Lepp and Ernest.
A memorial service will be on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at Pasadena Funeral Chapel located at 2203 Pasadena Blvd. Pasadena, TX 77502 at 10 am, followed by a presentation by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 472 at 1:15pm at the Veterans Houston National Cemetery located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr. Houston, TX 77038
