Naoma, better known as “Kat,” was born February 24, 1935, in Garrison, Texas to Carl M. Ritnour and Flossie Ola McShan Ritnour. Her family moved to the Houston area and Kat attended San Jacinto High School. During this time, she also worked at a gas station with her father and learned how to do everything from changing oil to rebuilding carburetors. Her upbringing made her self-reliant and unafraid to try new things.
She married her first love Howard E. “Buddy” Plummer in 1952 and together they welcomed four children, Tanya, Pamela, Teresa, and Michael. While keeping a watchful eye on her family, she also worked in many fields. Kat was one of the first tour guides for the Houston Astrodome. She also worked at W.K.M. Industries, Grocers Supply Company, and in retail sales for many years, eventually retiring from Montgomery Ward in Pasadena, Texas.
Kat had many hobbies and interests and loved to stay busy. She was a competitive dancer and a founding member of the Houston Whip Dance Club. She was an avid bowler and often bowled in leagues with her children. Kat was an accomplished angler and could catch, clean, and fry fish that rivaled some of the best restaurants. She could often be found mowing her own lawn and gardening. Kat was very creative and enjoyed sewing and decorating her shoes and t-shirts. She was a voracious reader and always had a book on her table.
Kat loved animals and had dogs and cats throughout her life. She always had a little dog to keep her company and to dote on.
Kat met John B. Miller while out dancing and they married in 1996 and lived in Pasadena until his death in 2015. They enjoyed many years together working on their home and going out to dance with friends and family.
In her later years Kat loved to go on casino trips and enjoyed spending time with her family. Even in her 70’s she could be found on a dancefloor with a grandchild or her children laughing and dancing into the night.
Kat had a wicked sense of humor and loved to laugh. She fearlessly spoke whatever was on her mind, no matter what, which could often create an awkward but hilarious situation.
Kat loved her children and grandchildren and enjoyed hosting holidays or birthdays as much as she could. Her coconut cake will be greatly missed as well as her wit and candor.
Kat was preceded in death by her parents, Carl M. Ritnour and Flossie Ola Kendall, her brother Carl H. Ritnour, former husband Howard E. Plummer, husband John Miller, stepbrother Bill White and his wife Lyla, and close friend Pat Haaksma.
Kat is survived by her brother Norman Gene Ritnour, sister Rebecca Forque Brawley, children, Tanya Tevanian and husband Amin, Pamela Johnson and husband Rick, Teresa Todd, Michael Plummer and wife Kimberly. She had 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and even a few great-great grandchildren.
Kat had the biggest heart of gold and she was always there to offer help or lend an ear to any family or friend in need of love, safe harbor or just a hug. When mom's arms wrapped around you, you knew you were worthy of love and all things special and beautiful in life.
Kat will be thought of often, loved, and missed by all. She was a character, an original and absolutely unforgettable.
