Celebrating the life of Sue W. Freeman, born on March 11, 1933 in Houston, Texas to William Haskel Williams Sr. and Alice Lucille Daugherty. At a young age her parents moved to the town of Troup in East Texas before returning to Houston. Sue started school in Houston where she remained until the fifth grade. At this point, her family moved and were pioneer settlers of the new city of Lake Jackson, Texas. She remained in Lake Jackson through high school graduation from Freeport High School in 1951. After graduation, she took some college courses, ultimately taking a path that lead her to business school. She began her career in insurance in 1953. This career took her to New Jersey for a short time, returning to Lake Jackson in 1956 where she took a position at Dow Chemical as a legal secretary.
On the seventeenth day of August 1956, at Surfside Beach, Sue met Bob Freeman, where it was love at first sight. After a whirlwind courtship that lasted four weeks, they married at the First Methodist Church in Lake Jackson on September 14, 1956, beginning a 63 plus year love affair. After the wedding, Sue followed Bob to Austin, where their first child, Jim, was born on September 17, 1957. They stayed in Austin until early 1960, when they returned to Houston and their second child, Joe, was born on July 16, 1960. In 1962 they began a series of moves that took them to Texas City, Victoria, Kingsville, and Corpus Christi, where Bob was employed as a finance company assistant manager. Sue worked in insurance the entirety of this time, finding a new position with each move because of her personality, work ethic, and reputation throughout the industry. In fact, employers often sought out Sue. In late 1968, their family made a move to Pasadena, Texas where they remained for the next 51 years. During this time, their third child, Janet, was born on April 23, 1971. Her birth completed their family.
The family became members of Asbury United Methodist Church in February 1969, where Sue was a tireless steward for Christ. She taught elementary Sunday school, was a M.Y.F. leader, mentored countless children and adults, and loved each of them as she did her own family. Following her retirement in March of 1995, she became a volunteer receptionist at Asbury, where she affectionately became known as “Grandma Sue” to the many children at the Asbury Day School. This was probably her fondest “job.” She loved watching the children each day and getting their hugs. This was also the case with all the children at the church on Sunday. Many had to come and say hi to “Ms. Sue” during the greeting time each Sunday.
Sue enjoyed traveling, and did so with Bob for the majority of 1997-2003, putting many miles on two different motor homes. They traveled those years making memories, while seeing 47 of the 48 contiguous states in the United States and several Canadian Provinces. Each time they returned from a trip, photos, stories, and memories were shared. They were members of several RV travel clubs where they made lifelong friends. Sue also like playing bridge, BUNCO, reading, working jig saw puzzles, watching her beloved Astros, as well as spending as much time with the ones she loved the most, her family and friends.
Her family, many, many friends, and especially the little children will sorely miss Sue. Sue was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and confidant. Sue went Home to be with Her Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 10:45 in the morning while holding the love of her life’s hand. Sending him their silent “I love You” signal just before she went peacefully into Heaven. Sue is preceded in death by her father, William Haskel Williams Sr., mother, Alice Lucille Daugherty, brothers, William Haskel Williams Jr., and James Walter Williams. Sue is survived by her husband, James Robert “Bob” Freeman Sr., son, James Robert Freeman Jr. and wife Lisa, son, Joseph Edward Freeman and wife Tina, and daughter, Janet Sue Freeman, six grandchildren, Tina Nichole Curry (Mark), Emily Renee Forester (Joseph), James David Freeman (Lindsay), Jessica Marie Chavolla, Sarah Elizabeth Beckett (Caleb), William Burke Cordova, and seven great-grandchildren, Hayden and Riley Curry, Jake and Rachel Forester, and Kate, Brynn & Tess Freeman.
The family will be having a private memorial service at Asbury United Methodist church at this time with plans to have a celebration of life service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Sue’s name to Asbury United Methodist Church, Thrive Campaign, or to a charity of your choice.
