

John worked in the fields and attended school until his senior year when he decided to serve his country in the army. He was sent to Korea. When he returned, he went to Ft. Bragg In North Carolina and attended jump school and while in the Airbourne, he made 26 jumps which he was very proud to talk about. He owned a plane with his brother-in-law, and they enjoyed flying in the San Joaquin Valley.
When he was discharged, he held several jobs but attended barber school in Bakersfield and a friend encouraged him to come to San Luis Obispo to cut hair. John worked in SLO and in Los Osos. He cut hair for 35+ years. After retirement, he filled in for barber friends who took vacation, and he cut his friends’ hair at home.
John met his wife of 54 years, Jackie, while living in San Luis Obispo. They were married in 1970. John has a son, Zig, and Jackie has a son, Tim.
They all enjoyed camping and traveling to Colorado. When the sons moved out on their own, Jackie and John went on some cruises and visited friends while traveling with their RV. John loved working in his yard and keeping busy. John enjoyed many past times such as fishing, golfing, and BBQing with friends and family.
Later on, Jackie was John’s caregiver but they each cared for Each other.
John is survived by his wife, Jackie, His sons, Zig and Tim, many nieces and nephews and a sister, Connie. He is preceded in death by his parents, Teresa and Ysauro Salamanca, his sisters, Bea, Molly and Mary and a brother Mario, and a daughter Cynthia. And their loving pets.
