Scott Eugene Mertz, 54, of Pataskala, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. He was born on May 25, 1971, in Saginaw, Michigan. Scott built a lifelong career in the utility industry, dedicating 25 years to American Electric Power, where he served as both a trader and a regulatory analyst.
Beyond his professional life, Scott was a man of wide-ranging interests and quiet passions. He was an avid reader who enjoyed exploring many genres, and he had a lasting love for the metal bands of the 80s and 90s. He found joy in photography, often capturing the small, meaningful moments around him. Sundays were reserved for cheering on the Detroit Lions with his family—a tradition he cherished.
Scott was the beloved son of Judith (Albright) Mertz and the late Eugene Mertz. In addition to his mother, Scott is also survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Deborah Mertz; children, Rachel Mertz and Aaron Mertz; siblings, Dawn (Jason) Seamands and Doug (Karen) Mertz and many nieces and nephews. Honoring the family’s wishes, cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at The Cross Walk Church, 751 Rosehill Rd., Reynoldsburg, OH 43068 with Pastor John Ennis officiating. Memorial visitation will begin one hour prior to the start of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association in Scott’s memory.
