Marvin grew up in Linden among a large extended family and played football for Linden High School. His talent stood out and he was recruited to play for several major universities, ultimately choosing to attend Auburn University.
At Auburn, Marvin started as defensive end and linebacker from 1965 through 1967. He was one of three young men who helped start the Auburn chapter of Campus Crusade. He was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Kappa Alpha. He graduated in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and received a master’s degree in Business Administration from University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1976.
Marvin received the Cliff Hare Award in 1968. This award is given annually to a senior student-athlete for academic and athletic success as well as leadership, integrity and courage.
In 1968, Marvin married Carol Jehle and they had 2 sons together, Billy and Brian.
Marvin served in active duty in the US Army at Fort Sill, OK from 1969 to 1971 and then served in the Army Reserve until 1988.
Marvin had a long and successful career with BellSouth/AT&T from 1971 to 2000 in Birmingham AL, Louisville KY, and Brentwood TN.
In 2002, he married Catherine Meyer in Murfreesboro, TN. Together they joined Operation Mobilization in 2003. Marvin embarked on a second career there in People Care, serving American missionaries working overseas. He retired from that position in May 2022.
Marvin was a man of deep faith and was an active member of Crossroads Church in Newnan, GA. He regularly demonstrated integrity, gentleness and determination. Marvin impacted numerous lives and was loved by many. He cherished his sons and grandkids and enjoyed puttering in the yard and watching football, especially the Auburn Tigers.
Although we grieve the loss of his physical presence, we are comforted that he is with the Lord, no longer suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Crossroads Church, 3260 State Road 16, Sharpsburg, GA from 10:00-11:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor John Hobbs will officiate.
