Flora G. Newton, age 97, passed away January 3, 2021. Flora was born in Cascilla, MS, to the late George H. Hankins, Sr. and Betty Murphree Hankins. She leaves to cherish her many memories to two children, Barbara Newton Rohner (Floyd) of Vestavia Hills, AL and Jerry Newton of Paris, TX, four grandchildren, Brian Rohner of Johns Creek, GA, Mark Rohner of Vestavia Hills, AL, Scott Carlton of Vestavia Hills, AL and Jessica Newman of Paris, TX, eight great-grandchildren, one sister Grace Bloodworth of Grenada, MS, two brothers, Earl Hankins of Madison, MS and Jim Hankins of Crystal Springs, MS, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Flora is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Jessie Howard Newton, father and mother, three sisters, Dessie Hankins, Edna Sykes, and Mae Hughes, and brother George H. Hankins, Jr.
Flora did not have a lazy bone in her body; she always wanted to get things done. She had a huge loving heart and was always willing to help others.
When she was a teenager “chopping“ cotton on those long rows in The Delta, she vowed not to do that the rest of her life. With a two year degree from Lee College in Sevierville, Tennessee, she began teaching for a while then moved on to other businesses. Around 1956, Flora was one of only two females in Mississippi in the produce brokerage business. She was successful and worked hard to be a success. She was a past president of the Jackson, MS chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Flora helped pave the way for all women to succeed in business.
