He was born on September 14, 1937 to the late Clarence Pace and Gladys Hill Pace. James attended Jackson Public Schools and Hinds Community College. He also went on to study at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition to his ministry, James worked at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home and for Crescent Uniform Rental, retiring after 36 years. He was a member of the Air National Guard as well. An avid fan and season ticket holder for the Mississippi Braves, James, his son Jeff and his grandson Houston were fixtures at the Trustmark Park. Affectionately called "Papa", one of his greatest joys was the privilege of nurturing and caring for his precious grandchildren daily while their parents worked.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Nell Pace; brothers, Ray Pace and Tom Pace; and sisters, Jeanette Ball and Bonnie Moore.
He is survived by his daughter, Celia Pace Tisdale (Allen); sons, Jeffrey D. Pace (Beth) and Jim Gayle (Darla); granddaughters, Kinsey Madden Tisdale, Shelby Faith Tisdale, and Noe'l Pace Griggs; grandson, Trenton Gayle; great-grandson, Houston Griggs; brother, Bill Pace; and several nieces and nephews.
