She was born on August 20, 1929 in Mendenhall, Mississippi, to the late Zollie Cockrell and Katie Peacock Cockrell. Mavis retired from Magnetek in Mendenhall where she worked for many years. In her free time, she loved to watch sports. Mavis was partial to the Atlanta Braves, but could be found watching anything including football, basketball, and even Little League. In addition, she put together hundreds of jigsaw puzzles over the years. In her younger days, Mavis could spend all day fishing, catching catfish and perch alongside her husband and other family members. She enjoyed going on roadtrips with her husband, JD, before his passing in 2004. Mavis treasured her family and delighted in being a grandmother.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and one step-daughter.
Mavis is survived by her children, Bobbie Stanley, Robert Evans (Cynthia), Doris Whittington (Ken), and Brenda Hendricks (George); step-daughter, Hope Fonnet; grandchildren, Kevin Grantham, Stacey Westberry, and Chris Barrett; as well as numerous beloved great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephew.
She was loved by all who met her. Mavis will be dearly missed by family and friends.
