Owen William (Billy) Baldwin, 77, of Jackson, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, surrounded by loved ones after battling cancer. Born on October 22, 1947, in Jackson, he was the beloved son of the late Mr. William Baldwin and Mrs. Margaret Rentz Baldwin.
From a young age, Billy dedicated his life to serving others — both personally, through his family’s funeral home and ambulance service, and later through his distinguished work in law enforcement.
In 1972, he joined the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office. Over the course of 26 years, he built a respected career as a deputy sheriff. He served with honor in multiple roles, known for his integrity, steady leadership, and genuine compassion. Whether responding to emergencies, mentoring young deputies, or supporting families in times of crisis, Billy was a dependable and reassuring presence. His contributions left a lasting legacy of public trust and safety in Hinds County. Billy was known for his quiet strength, gentle demeanor, and his unwavering dedication to helping people.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Larry Grayson Baldwin.
Billy is survived by his devoted wife, Judy Buffington Baldwin; his children: William Baldwin (Mary Beth) of Starkville, Mississippi, Emily Robertson (Michael) of Noblesville, Indiana, Ashlie Gavant (Ric) of Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Lacy Hurst (Lynn) of Carriere, Mississippi. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren, Barron, London, Harrison, Henry and Lily, his brother David Baldwin (Marina) of Brandon, Mississippi, five nieces and nephews, and many extended family members and friends.
Billy’s passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. His legacy of love, compassion, and devoted service — both through his work at Baldwin Funeral Home and in law enforcement — will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
Visitation and funeral will be held at Baldwin Lee Funeral Home in Pearl, Mississippi on Monday, June 2, 2025 from 6:00-8:00 pm with services on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Cedarlawn Cemetery.
