August was the loving father of Carol Comella and Anthony Comella (Sherryl). Carol and Anthony’s mother, Charline Comella, always had a special place in his heart. He was preceded in death by his middle child, John and his wife Barbara Carr Comella. He leaves behind two loving grandchildren, Christopher (Jamie) and Brian Comella; their dear and ever supportive mother Kathy Comella, as well as his beloved sister, Providence Deck.
August spent his working life in Chicago in advertising, primarily at Flair Merchandising. After his very successful career at Flair, he moved to Galena, Illinois, where he lived until a couple of years ago. He was always a city boy, but he really took to Galena and he was a beloved fixture at Eagle Ridge Resort, where he was the unofficial King of Sunday brunch.
He and Barbara were avid antique collectors and filled their Galena home full of treasures; so many that he had enough for four auctions before he moved to Peoria.
August also loved his little dogs. He had a whole parade of Yorkie’s and Maltese’s over the years. His last dog, Maggie, came from TAPS in Pekin where he was told she was a Yorkshire terrier. She was not. But he adored her just the same.
He was a lifelong Chicago sports fan (Cubs, Bears & Blackhawks), but he was too nervous to actually watch them play. Before he passed, he knew his Bears were going to the playoffs (which he also wouldn’t have watched).
These past couple of years, he’d acquired a support team that helped him with his day to day life. His nurse, Abby, his driver, Sandy, his cleaning lady, Kamara, and his manicurist, Honey. He called them his harem whenever anyone asked and even when they didn’t. We are so grateful to each and every one of them for their friendship and loving care.
A final shout out to August’s most faithful long-time friends, Al and Jimmy. Your regular phone calls always meant a lot. August was generous, kind, sarcastic, and always entertaining and he will be very much missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
There are no services planned, but donations in his name can be given to Safe Haven Humane Society, 1471 US Highway 20, Elizabeth, Il 61028. https://safehavenforpets.org/
