

Born September 22, 1926 in Sevierville, Tennessee to Charles Austin and Lily Leona (Cowden) Greene, he married Betty Jo Myers on October 2, 1948 in Marietta, Georgia. She died March 12, 2002 in Pekin. He also was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Ann Underwood of Creve Coeur; one son, Mark Dwaine (Hyecha) Greene of Gurnee; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Charles served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was a former member of the Richland Southern Baptist Church.
He worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 35 years as a heat treat operator, retiring in 1991.
Charles was a member of the American Checkers Federation and was the Illinois Checker champion for many years. At one time, he was the number 10 ranked checker player in the world. He also enjoyed model railroading.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Dwight Winnett will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
