
Born July 20, 1933 in Spann Hill, Kentucky to Louis and Lula (Troxell) Walters, he married Gladys Stewart in 1953 in East Peoria. He later married Mary Gladwell on June 27, 1964 in Bloomington. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Mike (Lori) Walters of Creve Coeur and Brian Walters of Washington; three daughters, Elaine (Don) Brasher of East Peoria, Sharon Walters of Richland, Missouri, and Michelle Gibson of East Peoria; fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe (Peggy) Walters of Yuma, Tennessee and Jim (Diane) Smith of Germantown Hills; and five sisters, Doris (Eunice) Smithee and Kathryn Walters, both of Minier, Janie (Larry) Swift of Lawrenceville Tennessee, Charlotte Lockard of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Diane (Richard Frisby) Pondelick of Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steven Walters; one brother, Kenny Walters; and a son-in-law, Roger Gibson.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Smokey had worked as an auto mechanic at Parkway Chrysler/Plymouth in Peoria for many years. Previously, he had been self employed and worked for Caterpillar, Inc. in East Peoria.
He enjoyed collecting antique cars and connecting with friends via his computer. He was a loving and devoted grandfather.
His funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur Chapel, where visitation will be one hour before the funeral. Father Kenneth Marchulones will officiate. Cremation will follow the funeral.
