Pekin, IL – Elizabeth Margaret Mathias died at Pekin Manor on June 15th after a brief illness. She was 102 years old. Born in Green Valley, Illinois on September 22, 1911, she was the daughter of Harm J. and Wendelka (Arenholz) Eggena, and one of nine children. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her only child, Marilyn Mathias Root and her son-in-law, Robert G. Root of Boston, Massachusetts, and by one sister-in-law, and an extended family of nieces, nephews, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
An avid gardener and volunteer, she lived independently until 100, continuing to volunteer at the Miller Center and at Pekin Hospital. When asked she would say her three favorite activities were dancing, gardening, and being a volunteer.
A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin, Elizabeth had instructed that following cremation, graveside services by private and attended by only her daughter and son-in-law. Arrangements are being handled by Pekin Chapel of the Davison-Fulton Woolsey Funeral Home.
