

Born February 8, 1949 in Canton to Walter C. and Irene O. (Garlish) Major, he married Dolores Ann Reilly on September 24, 1983 in Farmington.
Surviving are his wife; one sister, Joyce (Larry) Hartman of Moline; one niece, Laura (Steven Teeter) Hartman of Moline; one nephew, Jamie (Jennifer) Hartman of Moline; one great-nephew, Jacob; and one great-niece, Jessica.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Major.
He was a United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.
Fred had worked at Hiram Walker in Peoria and Caterpillar, Inc. at both the Mapleton Foundry and General Offices in downtown Peoria. He then was a substitute rural mail carrier in Iowa and later in the Hanna City area.
He was a member of the Farmington Masonic Lodge #192 A.F. & A.M., Farmington American Legion Post #140, and the Farmington Moose Lodge #1571, where he was a past Governor.
Fred was known for his joke telling.
His funeral will be at noon Friday, September 26, 2014 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur. The Rev. John Plunkett will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be Monday at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, where military rites will be accorded.
