Born September 6, 1933 in Peoria to Julius M. and Sylvia A. (Adkins) Knobeloch, he married Mary Thelma Grigg on November 21, 1959 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Peoria. She preceded him in death on December 16, 2020 in Peoria. His parents also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen (Terri) Knobeloch of East Peoria and John Knobeloch of Indianapolis, Indiana; one daughter-in-law, Janet Knobeloch of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Derek (Amy) Knobeloch, Ryan (Tomi) Knobeloch, Shelby (Ryan) Martin, all of East Peoria, Garrett Knobeloch, Sabrina Knobeloch, Sophia Knobeloch, all of Indianapolis; four great-grandchildren, James Louise Knobeloch, Annabelle Lynn Martin, Zoey Faye Knobeloch and Gunner Eldon Knobeloch (born three days after Garth’s passing), all of East Peoria.
Garth graduated from Greeley Grade School and Woodruff High School, both in Peoria. He served with the United States Army at Fort Lenard Wood, Missouri and then attended Bradley University earning two Masters Degrees in Education and Administration. He was a member of the Bradley University Alpha Phi Omega - Zeta Alpha Chapter. He taught Industrial Arts at Harlem High School in Rockford before moving to East Peoria to teach various Industrial Arts classes (woodshop being his favorite) at East Peoria Community High School until his retirement in 1997. During his tenure, he kept busy outside of the classroom too. For over 30 years, he kept Basketball score books and worked the Football scoreboard. He served as a School Board Member for both the Grade School District 86 and High School District 309.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2024 at REVIVE Church in East Peoria, where visitation will be held from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Pastor Robert Finley will officiate. Interment will be held following the funeral at Fon du Lac Cemetery in East Peoria, with military rites provided by the United States Army and Tazewell Military Rites Team.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to East Peoria Community High School Scholarship Fund, 1401 East Washington Street, East Peoria, IL 61611.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the entire staff at the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka for two years of exceptional loving care. Garth enjoyed bantering with his favorite nurse, Joyce Erickson.
