

Wayne was born on August 7, 1929 on a farm in Fulton County to Fred H. and Mabel P. (Latimer) Spenny.
He married Charmane Helen Coats on October 2, 1948 at the Glasford United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on January 11, 2018. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Ralph Spenny and great-granddaughter, Emerson Howell.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Jo and Tom Lewellen of The Villages, Florida; one son, Doug and Darcey Spenny of Glasford; four grandchildren, Chris and Christy Howell, Damon Spenny, Danielle Prohaska, and Devon and Josh White; five great-grandchildren, Brendon and Mara Prohaska, Brady and Lily Prohaska, Josiah, Christian, and Eve White, and two great-great grandsons. He also leaves one brother, Keith and Janis Spenny of Indiana.
Wayne farmed with his father before he and brother Bob co-founded Spenny Brothers Trucking Company and Standard Oil Service Station and Garage in Glasford.
He later worked at Caterpillar where he and Bob developed a patented tractor part. In 1952 he had the opportunity to become a partner in R.E. Common Equipment Company where he directed the parts and service department. He retired after 38 years.
Mr. Spenny was truly community minded. His volunteerism included the Glasford Grade School Board of Education, Glasford Optimist Club, Cub Scouts, and Little League Baseball Teams. He served 35 years on the Timber Hollis Fire Protection District, 21 years as Trustee and Treasurer of the District. In 1987 he was appointed to the Lancaster Cemetery Association as Director and Board President. He kept the book of plots updated and knew where many graves were located.
Wayne was a 50-year and life member of Lancaster Lodge #106, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons in Glasford, where he was a past Master. He also was a member of Scottish Rite Bodies and the Heart of Illinois Shriners. At Glasford United Methodist Church, he was instrumental in the clean-up and rebuild of the sanctuary after a fire and served on many committees through the years. He was honored to be the oldest church member.
Wayne and Charmane spent 23 winters at their home in Arizona. They started camping in 1963 with the Illinois Bushwackers, and Coachmen clubs attending many conventions and rallies. They traveled the country and Canada for over 50 years.
He was a very talented craftsman. He could build or repair anything made of wood or steel. He was a superior mechanic on equipment of all types. He enjoyed camping, woodworking and was very talented at stained glass objects of all kinds, winning blue ribbons at the Heart of Illinois Fair.
His visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2025 at Glasford United Methodist Church, where Masonic Rites will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. and a funeral service will immediately follow. Pastor Judy Doyle will officiate. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
