

Born August 22, 1930 in Witt to Roy S. and Elvira C. (Niesman) Shallenberger, he married Mary L. Smith on April 9, 1950 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Dianna (Louie) Eertmoed of Pekin; one son, Joe Shallenberger, Jr. of Pekin; three grandsons, Colby Shallenberger, Sky (Stephanie) Eertmoed, and Wes (Melissa) Eertmoed, all of Pekin; three great-grandchildren, Alivia Eertmoed, Colin Eertmoed, and Derick Shallenberger; one great-great-grandson, Max; three brothers, Roy Shallenberger of Morton, David (Cindy) Shallenberger of Pekin, and Ronnie (Rita) Grashoff of Lewistown; and four sisters, Patsy Ann (Jake) Sturm, Ann (Donnie) Potter, and Lisa Shallenberger Drury, all of Pekin, and Monica (Alvin) Connett of South Pekin.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Archie Dean Shallenberger on January 3, 2007; and one brother, Rick Grashoff.
He owned and operated Joe Shallenberger Excavating in Pekin for over 50 years. Previously, he worked with his father at Roy Shallenberger Lumber Company in Pekin.
He was life member of the Pekin Moose Family Center #916 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1869 in Pekin. He was former member of Laborers Local #231 in Pekin, and Teamsters & Chauffeurs Union Local #627 and Operating Engineers Local #649, both in Peoria.
Joe enjoyed boating, playing pool, and traveling with Mary in their motor home. He loved to be with his family and friends at his cabin in Copperas Creek. He was a fan of NASCAR and had followed Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and later Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Jeff Leeman will officiate. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
