He was born November 19, 1946 in Peoria to Robert Joseph and Lois May (Keller) Johnston. His parents preceded him in death.
Surviving are one sister, Julie (Thomas) Berry of Washington; one brother, Joseph (Janis) Johnston of Bartonville; two nieces and one nephew.
A United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he served from September 15, 1964 to November 22, 1967. He served aboard the USS Eversole.
Richard was a disabled American veteran and was a member of the Martin-Courtney Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4835 in Creve Coeur.
Richard enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and fishing.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
